Frequently Asked Questions About PDT (Photodynamic Therapy)
What is PDT (Photodynamic Therapy)?
Photodynamic Therapy is a treatment that both mediccfal and cosmetic patients are
enjoying today. The results are remarkable. Patients will experience textural
improvements, pore minimization, and enhanced reduction of brown and red
pigmentation that is evident in sun damaged skin.
Whether treating sun damage or acne the process is very similar. The solution is
applied topically (directly onto the skin) to targeted lesions. A light or laser source is
then used to activate the solution and the targeted cells are destroyed.

PDT with Laser / IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)?
PDT works in combination with light or laser sources to combat the effects of sun
damage. It works by targeting the sun damaged skin, reducing red and brown spots in
the skin. This non-invasive photorejuvenation treatment has been shown to
improve sun damaged areas and improve texture and overall appearance.

PDT with BLU-U Light Therapy?
Used in conjunction with a blue light for the effective treatment of acne. This
procedure improves acne by targeting sebaceous glands and bacteria which are
destroyed in the PDT Treatment by the blue light.

Will I feel any discomfort?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during PDT therapy within the
standard course of treatment. The procedure usually takes less than an hour to
perform. Expect slight redness and peeling/flaking of the outer skin cells up to 3-4
days following treatment. Under the light source you will feel slight warmth, but
willn ot receive a tan. You will need to stay indoors for 24 hours followig the
procedure and avoid light since the PDT therapy is still active.

Advantages over other treatments?
PDT is one of the most effective treatments due to:
~ Quick response (only 1-3 treatments are required)
~ Easily performed in a specialty clinic environment
~ Non-invasive (no needles or surgury required)
~ Excellent cosmetic outcome (improved coloring, texture and tone)
Other treatments can take up to 4 months vs. a very quick response with PDT (up to 6
weeks).

How many treatments will I require?
While initial results may be seen as early as the first session, some patients require a
series of three to five sessions to see significant results. However, it really depends on
the patient and the severity of the skin condition being treated.

How sucessful is it?
Up to 90% of patients undergoing treatments have received tremendous results.

Are the results permanent?
PDT is a treatment, not a cure. Most results will last 1-2 years, depending on lifestyle
choices.

Is this treatment covered by my health insurance plan?
No. These treatments are not covered since they are considered 'cosmetic' in nature.
Please consult your physician to determine if any aspects of this treatment may be
covered or if they would be tax deductable.
